Surgical Robots
Medsys has been involved in the emerging technology market of surgical robotics since 1997, when it launched the R&D project of an automated
laparoscope manipulator with Dr Roland Polet, Belgian gynaecologist from Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (UCL Brussels). Dr Polet is member
of the board of the International Society of Gynecologic Endoscopy.
The aim of the project was :
- to provide a stable image to the laparoscopic surgeon
- to enable the surgeon to optimize the endoscope position autonomously
- to perform solo-surgery in straightforward laparoscopic surgery, when a lack of assistance becomes a major threat to the quality of surgery
The LapMan® laparoscope manipulator was launched on the European market
in 2003 and received FDA clearance the same year. The product has received an Award from FROST & SULIVAN in 2005.

In September 2006, Medsys launched the LapStick®, a revolutionary RF interface with joystics positioned on a laparoscopic
instrument that moves the arms of the LapMan® enabling the surgeon to control his endoscopic vision.
With the success of the LapMan®, the robotics R&D department has been expanded and various partnerships
with internationally reputed university centers active in robotics have been established.
